You already know that I have a thing for our veterans. I have spoken about it many times, and now that the 75th Anniversary of D-Day is here, and my Poppa Carmen was there, it’s a reason to mention our servicemen one more time.

One June 6, 1944 more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory”. More than 5000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe.

The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe to defeat Hitler and liberate Europe.

There is some debate as to what the "D" in D-Day stands for, however, the most common explanation is the word "Day". In terms of military history, "D" is day one of an important military operation or invasion, the second day is D-2 etc.

Without these brave men’s sacrifices the world – our world – would be a totally different place and we owe them our complete gratitude.
