HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY

Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones and are not working today. That's not the case for us, however, we love what we do so that's ok. Below are a few facts about why we celebrate either Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day:

-Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492. He was bound for Asia with the backing of the Spanish monarchs at the time - King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.. He wanted to find both gold and spices, however, instead of arriving in the Far East, he landed in the Bahamas instead..

-He returned back to Spain in March of 1493 with treasure and slaves.

-He crossed the Atlantic several more times before his death in 1506, however, it wasn't until his third trip that he realized that he hadn't reached Asia, but had landed upon a continent previously unknown to Europeans (except for the Viking established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland).

-The day was first celebrated as a Federal Holiday in 1937. President Roosevelt was influenced by the Knights of Columbus, an influential Catholic organization, to create the holiday.

-The Holiday both honors Columbus' achievements and the Italian-American heritage.

-Controversy over the day dates back to the 19th century when anti-immigrant groups in the U.S. rejected the holiday because of it's association with Catholicism.

-In recent decades, Native Americans and other groups have protested the celebration of an event that resulted in the colonization of the Americas and the many problems that were caused by that.

So whichever way you decide to honor the day, I hope that you have a good one!
