HUMMINGBIRDS REMEMBER???

Updated: Apr 29, 2019

Like a lot of you I have always loved animals. They are such sensitive creatures and I can’t even imagine a world without them. So when I saw on the news about an injured hummingbird, it made me realize how even the tiniest of creatures can really have feelings.

First of all I had no idea that hummingbirds left our area in Fall and travelled to Mexico or another warm climate, let alone that they lived more than one year, and in some cases up to 10 years. The average is 3 – 5 years. I always thought of them as too delicate to last long.

So to see a man on the news who claims that he has helped an injured one survive, and thrive, and then return for the next three years was so surprising to me. He is sure that it’s the same one not only because of the coloring etc., but also because when he put his hand out, the bird landed on it. Have you ever known a hummingbird to do something like that?

I have always heard that crows are smart. In fact one that must have been raised as a pet once landed on my family’s deck. Unfortunately I was not home. This bird landed on the table and started having sips of the coffee that was there, pecked at the food, and was totally annoyed when my mom and brother went inside. He then proceeded to scratch at the screen in order to get in. He stayed several hours. Each time they went back out with something different to see if he was interested. He even took a bite out of a jalapeno and seemed to like it! We’ve always wondered about that bird and hoped that he found his way home.

Yes, most of us feel that our dogs and cats can feel what we’re experiencing especially when it’s a strong emotion, but a tiny hummingbird with such a tiny brain??? Well this just goes to show you that we need to be even more sensitive to every creature on this earth (except snakes, skunks and mosquitos of course)!
