OTHER WAYS TO DYE EGGS

Updated: Apr 14, 2019

It's almost Easter for some of us and if you celebrate this holiday and need to decorate some eggs and you don't have any of those kits on hand, do you know that there are a few other ways to create interesting effects?

If you have artistic talent, and even if you don't because sometimes it's just fun to see the results, use non-toxic acrylic paint to make your masterpieces.

You can also use different food items to die eggs. All you need is some alum (found in the spice isle), baking powder, white vinegar and the following...

-Yellow onion - boil 1 1/2 cups of water along with the outer papery skins for 30 minutes, remove the skins, and add 1/8 tsp alum.

-Grape juice - stir 1/4 tsp baking power into 1 cup of room temperature grape juice.

-Tumeric - dissolve 1 tablespoon of turmeric into 1 cup of boiling water and stir in 1/4 tsp baking power.

-Berry tea bags - steep 2 teabags into one cup of boiling water and stir in 1/8 tsp alum.

-Beets - simmer I cup of shredded beets into 1 1/4 cups of water for 30 minutes, strain and add 1 tsp white vinegar.

You can also empty 2 packets of unsweetened Kool-Aid Drink Mix into an 8 oz. container along with 2 Tablespoons of water, mix, and spoon over the cooled hardboiled eggs. For a tie-dye effect only partially cover them with one color and pour other colors over the egg too. Then poor a small amount of tap water over the eggs to set the colors.

Use your imagination and experiment.

We don't dye eggs every year, but we do want to start incorporating this tradition back. It's little customs like these that make good memories!
