WHO TO NOTIFY WHEN YOU'RE MOVING: Do you know all 15?

Updated: Aug 8, 2018

We all know that moving can be a very stressful time and, well, during that time you may not be thinking clearly of all the places you need to contact to let them know of your new address. No worries, we've got you covered!

1. THE POST OFFICE

So you know you need to tell the people who bring some of your most important things to your house that you're moving - but did you know that it's super easy now? Go to The USPS website and change your address in an instant! It costs $1 to verify your identity.

2. YOUR WORK

Your co-workers most likely know that you're moving, but does your Human Resource Department? Even if you receive direct deposit, your company still needs to update your tax forms, retirement account statements, and other important documents with your new address.

3. UTILITY COMPANIES

This one may be the most obvious, but it may also be the most important to do promptly. If you wait and forget, you could be paying the bills for the new resident! So don't forget these companies: electric, cable, gas, water, sewer and garbage.

4. BANKS + CREDIT CARDS

Some of our most private information is regarding our money so don't risk the new owners getting your statements! Don't forget to update your mailing address for your bank, credit cards, investment accounts, loan providers, and other financial institutions.

5. THE DMV

Ok so we know no one wants to go to the dreaded DMV but if you move within the state you can update your address online WooHoo! Depending on your state, you may need to update your car registration, or even get a new driver's license—and some states have tight deadlines for these changes so check!

6. INSURANCE COMPANIES

If you don't want to have an issue filing a claim in the future be sure to contact your health insurance, dental insurance, car insurance, life insurance, and homeowner's insurance to update them with your change of address.

7. THE IRS

Well, because you don't want to mess with the IRS! Oh, and your taxes contain sensitive information so you don't want it to get in the wrong hands. You can update via mail and phone or in person.

8. CELL PHONE PROVIDER

Your primary residence determines the tax rates on your wireless bills; therefore, cell phone companies make it mandatory to update your billing address with any changes. And don't worry - this one is quick and easy.

9. SOCIAL SECURITY

Although fewer statements are sent via mail, individuals who are 60 and over, who aren't receiving benefits, and who don't have a My Social Security account online still receive paper statements. You can submit a change of address online or by calling 800-772-1213. Also call Medicare, Medicaid et cetera.

10. VOTER REGISTRATION

If you want your vote to count (and in this political climate I'm sure you do!) a current address is required. Many times you can do this along with Step 5. while you're at the DMV but if not contact the office of your registrar and get it squared away before the next election.

11. DOCTOR'S OFFICE

When it comes to your healthcare you want to stay on top of things - and that includes informing them of an address change. You don't want to get behind on a bill because it went to your old address. And that goes for your dentist and other healthcare providers as well.

12. TSA PRECHECK + GLOBAL ENTRY

To avoid waiting in those long lines (again!) keep your status current and membership valid by keeping your address current. by calling 855-347-8371 or submitting an update request online. Happy traveling!

13. ONLINE SHOPPING SITES

You know how easy it is to re-order something on Amazon or get that perfect new pair of shoes from Nordstrom delivered in 1-click? Well, you don't want to it to arrive at your old doorstep! So do yourself a favor, and get those new shoes to your new house!

14. SUBSCRIPTIONS

Think about anything you get delivered from magazines to groceries, meal prep boxes to contacts, BarkBox, or maybe most importantly, wine club! You pay money to get these things delivered to your house so make sure they show up at the right door for you to enjoy.

15. FRIENDS + FAMILY

We love to send handwritten notes, actual paper invitations to parties and gifts to celebrate our friends and family. Please make sure you update your new address with those you love (and us!) so you can get fun things in the mail - not just boring bills!
